Mama Me: Expressive Arts and Mindfulness Group for Moms with Babies

A warm, creative space to slow down, connect with yourself, and meet other mothers.

Motherhood can be full of love and meaning—and also leave surprisingly little room to notice what is happening inside you. Mama Me is a six-week expressive arts and mindfulness group where you can pause, explore your inner experience, and connect with other mothers while your baby is welcome alongside you.

In this guided 6-week group, you will:

  • Learn Focusing—an embodied method for tuning into your inner experience and working with it
  • Explore your inner experience through art-making, writing and mindful movement
  • Connect with other mothers in a warm, supportive small-group environment
  • Develop ways of listening to yourself that you can continue using on your own

The group is limited to 10 participants.

Is this the right group for you?

Mama Me is for mothers who would like some time and space to reconnect with themselves while navigating the experience of early motherhood.

You don’t need to have a particular problem to work on, and you don’t need to consider yourself “artistic.” You can come simply because you would like a place to slow down, reflect, create and connect.

What we’ll do

Focusing

In this 6-week group you will learn Focusing. Focusing is a process for sensing into and processing your inner experience, developed by Eugene Gendlin. It is a step-by-step process that can help you slow down and become more aware of what is happening inside.

Each week we will practice Focusing together. By the end of the group, you’ll have a process you can use on your own or even with friends.

There will be opportunities to combine Focusing with art-making, writing and movement.

If you find the idea of art-making scary, you can choose to write instead. And this isn’t art-making where things have to look pretty: stick figures, lines, shapes and splodges are very welcome!

Art in this context is simply a way of expressing a little of what is happening inside and giving it form. No one else needs to see what you make, although there will be opportunities to share if you wish.

Movement

Each session will also include some gentle qigong movement to help ground and settle us.

Practicalities

This group is not currently running. I’m planning to offer Mama Me again in the future, and I’ll post new dates here when they are available. If you’d like to hear about the next group, please contact me.

This is a closed group; drop-ins are not available.

Babies are welcome

Bring your baby if you want or need to. If you have childcare and would prefer to come on your own, that’s completely fine too.

Mama Me is designed for mothers with babies who are not yet crawling. This helps create the kind of calm, spacious environment where you can slow down, turn inward and participate in the group activities.

If your baby is already crawling or walking, you’re still very welcome to join the group, but you’ll need to arrange childcare for your baby during the sessions.

We’ll co-create a warm, supportive and adaptable environment for mothers at this particular stage of motherhood.

About Stephanie

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with a special interest in supporting women in their journey of motherhood. One of my primary therapeutic approaches is Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy.

My own difficult experience postpartum led me to discover Focusing as a personal practice. Several years later, I wrote a peer-reviewed article about that experience, which was published in a book. You can read more about my story and work here.

I’ve led several groups for mothers like this when I lived in Vancouver, and this will be my first Mama Me group in Hamilton. I’m looking forward to creating a warm, connecting, deepening and fun experience together.
